The Gulf of Taranto curves 140 kilometers along Puglia's Ionian shore, its sheltered waters bridging the heel and arch of southern Italy. Ancient mariners knew this bay as a staging ground — Taras, founded by Spartan colonists in 706 BCE, grew wealthy on its twin harbors and the purple dye harvested from local murex shells. The Mar Grande, the outer gulf, opens directly to the Ionian, while the Mar Piccolo, an inland lagoon fed by submarine freshwater springs, became Europe's most productive mussel farm by the twentieth century. Between them lies a rotating bridge, installed in 1887 and still in service, connecting the medieval island centro storico to the modern grid of Borgo Nuovo. Today the gulf draws sailors for its steady maestrale winds and transparent water. The Cheradi Islands — San Pietro and San Paolo — rise two kilometers offshore, their limestone cliffs crowned with scrub maquis and ringed by submerged Posidonia meadows that shelter octopus, bream, and seasonal pods of common dolphins. The islets remain uninhabited save for a decommissioned lighthouse on San Paolo and the ruins of a Benedictine monastery on San Pietro, abandoned in the sixteenth century after Saracen raids. Summer water temperature peaks at 26°C in August; autumn sailing extends through October when the gulf remains calm and the coastal light turns amber. Taranto's working waterfront still handles container traffic and naval vessels — the city hosts Italy's principal naval base — but the promenade along Via Lungomare has been pedestrianized since 2018, opening quayside access for leisure craft. Departure points cluster near Piazzale Democrate at the Mar Grande's northern shore, where a public ferry terminal adjoins private berths. Most coastal sailings trace the eastern arc toward Punta Rondinella, then swing south to the Cheradi anchorage, covering 18 to 22 nautical miles in a half-day circuit. Sunset charters extend to the western cape at Capo San Vito, adding an hour to the route and catching the descending sun over the Salento peninsula.
